LINCOLN – The Nebraska State Colleges Board of Trustees selected Dr. Gul Ahmad as the 2021 Teaching Excellence Award recipient for the Nebraska State College System. Dr. Ahmad was selected during the Board of Trustees meeting on March 17th and will be celebrated during the spring commencement ceremony at Peru State College.

“Dr. Ahmad is an outstanding educator who cares deeply about the success of each individual. His dedication to students reflects the core values, mission and vision of Peru State College and the Nebraska State College System,” said Chancellor Paul Turman of the Nebraska State College System (NSCS). “He is highly respected for his teaching and mentoring roles, creates an interactive learning environment, and works diligently to ensure the success of all of his students. His impressive publication record shows a knowledge of and passion for his field that are both critical elements of teaching excellence.”

Each year the NSCS recognizes a faculty member from one of the three State Colleges with the Teaching Excellence Award. A nominee from each College is submitted for consideration after being selected as the College-level Teaching Excellence Award recipient.  The award recognizes superior teaching and advising, innovative instructional practice, high educational standards, and engaging learning environments that inspire and motivate students.

Dr. Ahmad is an innovative and effective teacher, proven and productive research scientist, and a tireless public servant of Peru State College, the Nebraska State College System, and science at local, regional, and national levels. He serves on numerous ad hoc committees and recently completed terms serving as Chair of Faculty Senate, Arts and Sciences representative of the Teacher Education Committee, and member of the Peru State College Institutional Review Board. Dr. Ahmad has also served as the Head Judge in the Greater Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair.

“Dr. Ahmad is an enthusiastic lecturer, productive scientist, and proactive mentor. I can guarantee that my life and career is not the only one that he has positively impacted throughout his time at Peru State. In view of what the Teaching Excellence Award stands for, I cannot imagine a worthier candidate,” said Whitni Redman, a former Peru State student.

“Teaching to me is a way to impart knowledge to the younger generation while affecting students in a positive manner. I teach because I hope to leave a lasting impact on my students and give them the tools to shape a better future for themselves,” said Dr. Gul Ahmad, Associate Professor of Biology. “I am truly honored to be awarded the Teaching Excellence Award for igniting the minds of my students to feel the same passion for science that I do and hope to see my legacy continue through my students.”

Ahmad earned his Ph.D. and M.Phil in parasite immunology, master of science in parasitology, and a bachelor of science in zoology from AM University in India.

"I am a first-generation student, and it was a really hard decision for me to attend college or not. Then, I found Peru State College. With the scholarships and affordable living expenses here, Peru made the decision a lot less difficult."
