Dominican Republic Service Trip, May 2020
Meaningful. Sustainable. Unforgettable. Journey to the Dominican Republic to discover the wonders of marine life—and what you can do to help preserve it. Here, you’ll learn about the effects of overfishing, tourism, and climate change on coral reefs in the Caribbean before joining the movement to support its restoration. Working together with community members, you’ll collect fragments of naturally broken coral and transplant them back into the reef, and do your part to preserve this important ecosystem. As you foster meaningful relationships within the community, you’ll celebrate customs and help continue conservation efforts for generations to come. There will be a 3 credit-hour course that will be associated with the trip during the spring 2020 semester. The trip will take place following the completion of the semester. Cost of the trip which includes airfare, transportation, hotel, and meals is $3,650
Study Abroad in Ecuador, June 11-24, 2020
Students will first fly into Quito and spend a few days in this metropolitan city that dates back to around 980 AD. Here they will be introduced to the rich history of the city and begin their cultural immersion. Students will then spend several days in the northern village of San Clemente with the Andean people. The students will serve at the school and meet with the leaders and families in the area leaning about their rich history as Pre-Inca people and their close relationships with the regional volcanic geography. They will then drive south and, after a brief stop at the equator, will take a small plane into the rain forest and spend time at Sharamentsa with the Achuar tribe. Sharamentsa has created a community organization that receives small groups of visitors like ours so that we can learn their way of life. After flying out of the rain forest students will have time for some recreational activites in Banos before they fly back from Quito to Omaha.
